Vicky Chan, along with team members Melissa Chan and Gianfranco Galagar, embarked on the K Farm project in April 2019 in Hong Kong. The project, which spans 2000m2, was completed in May 2021. The design inspiration came from the community, with the circular geometries of the design symbolizing unity, plants, and pier elements. The farming facilities are open 24/7 and offer a variety of activities for all to enjoy, regardless of their interest in farming.
The uniqueness of K Farm lies in its innovative approach to urban farming. It challenges traditional farming methods by introducing three types of farming to suit the specific coastal climate of Victoria Harbour. Hydroponics provides weatherproof farming for all conditions, aquaponics studies the coexistence of fish and plants, and organic farming includes various heights and species for inclusive farming.
The design of K Farm is not only innovative but also inclusive. It caters to people with special needs by incorporating vertical green walls, farming tables, and hydroponics that eliminate the need for bending down. The farm also features rainwater collection tanks and solar panels on the roof of the office to cover electrical consumption. A smart sensor is used to control water and light, making the farm both efficient and sustainable.
The project reclaimed an industrial site with zero greenery and transformed it into a thriving park. All materials used for the project were sourced within 800km of Hong Kong, and modular assembly allowed for the buildings to be relocated. The use of lighting eliminated physical barriers and provided safety signals along the edges at night.
Despite the challenges posed by the coastal climate, K Farm serves as an experiment for urban farming under extreme weather conditions. The data gathered will be invaluable for future urban farms in Hong Kong and across Asia. The farm also offers a range of activities, including classes, a farmers market, and community-related events, to benefit the community and promote farming as a viable and professional career.
The design of K Farm has been recognized with a Golden A' Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embody extraordinary excellence, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics. K Farm is indeed a testament to the transformative power of design and innovation in urban farming.
